A Webinar of Interest to IRBs The NIH Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) Policy: Responsibilities of Investigators and IRBs. September 23, 2008 This event, scheduled for September 23, 2008, from 1:00 until 2:30 PM EDT, will feature two expert presenters, Dr. P. Pearl O’Rourke, Director, Human Research Affairs, Partners Healthcare, and Dr. Laura Lyman Rodriguez, Senior Advisor to the Director for Research Policy at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH. They will clearly and completely guide participants through the 2007 NIH GWAS Policy, and explain how investigators and IRBs can most effectively apply this policy to their work. Dr. Rodriguez will review, among other things, who and what the policy covers, and what adhering to the policy entails. ILAR will hold an international conference September 23-26, 2008 in Washington, DC on Animal Research in a Global Environment: Meeting the Challenges. This pivotal meeting will bring together those in the international animal research community who participate in or are planning to conduct international collaborative studies in research or testing to further biomedical advances. Challenges to international research efforts include differences in regulations or guidelines for the use of animals, quality of training for those who work with animals, quality of veterinary care, and quality of the animals themselves. Participants will address these and other topics, such as outsourcing studies and issues specific to research with mice and nonhuman primates. Participants will also have an opportunity to interact with members of the Committee to Update the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals during a question and answer session.
